Accurate Truckee River Fly Fishing Beta.
Experience Matters on the Truckee River
The river is beautiful right now…..and very fishy! We are catching both rainbows and Browns right now. On dry flies occasionally, under an Indy, and swinging streamers……The water is in the low to mid 50s, and makes for hard fighting fish. Mostly we use a 5 weight rod for dries and a 6wt. for Indicator fishing, and streamers. Two handed rods are a good choice for the lower river. For the most current information visit my Big Fly Blog.
In the Sierras the weather is constantly changing, so come prepared to dress for a range of conditions. It may snow flurry in the morning, and be warm enough for shorts by afternoon. Since we are on/in the water, or it may rain at any time for a short while, I suggest synthetic fabrics like Patagonia ski fleece, and decidedly discourage wearing cotton. Bring medium weight fleece for underneath their waders, the water is still chilly. Warm socks too. Upper body should be layered for a range of temps. Be sure to include a waterproof jacket and you will be set. A good sun hat is nice, but try to find one not bright white….the fish can see the hat coming!!!!
At elevation we get twice the sun and radiation, so sunscreen is called for. Some enjoy the new sun gloves, and including a face covering Buff is a good idea too. Bring polarized glasses of course; they’re needed for spotting fish.
